Container state and permission problems.

Docker exec fails

Check the container state first

docker ps -a --filter name=<name>

Exec against a stopped container fails with a message that reads like a permission problem.

Shell availability

docker inspect -f '{{.Path}} {{.Args}}' <name>

A distroless or scratch image has no shell at all, so exec cannot work. Use docker cp or docker logs instead.

Permissions inside

docker exec -u root <name> id docker exec -w /srv <name> pwd

Scope: failure mode: Container state and permission problems.
