Exit code 2, including the misleading CRLF case.

No such file or directory

Exit code 2 is overloaded

Most shells use it for "file not found", and many programs use it as a general failure. The message text is the reliable part.

The most common cause is a trailing character

ls "file.txt " cat $'file.txt\r'

A CR from a Windows-authored file is invisible in the error message but changes the filename being looked up.

The path is relative and the working directory is not what you think

pwd ls -la ./target

A symlink points at a removed file

readlink -f /path/to/link

The link still exists, the target does not. This reports as ENOENT on any operation that follows it.
