SIGSEGV from a shell script, and where to look.

Segmentation fault

SIGSEGV is a bad memory access

The process dereferenced something invalid. It is a bug in the program or a mismatch between it and its libraries.

Get a backtrace from the core

ulimit -c unlimited apt-get install gdb gdb ./binary core

Look at the last mapped files

dmesg -T | tail -20

Common when a binary moves under a running process

Replacing a shared library or executable while it is mapped produces this. Upgrade during a restart window instead.
